Walnuts Keep the Momentum with Win Over Merrion

A sunny evening in Terenure saw the Walnuts welcome Merrion for our penultimate home game of the season – a short hop from Ballsbridge but a big occasion in our growing rivalry.

Merrion batted first but quickly found themselves under pressure. Under the expert guidance of captain Gerry, the Walnuts’ bowlers were relentless, keeping it tight and testing at every opportunity.

Eddie struck early, Mark followed suit, and Sean, Jan, Gourang, and Liam all chipped in with key breakthroughs. Jan’s lightning spell, in particular, was a masterful exhibition of fast medium bowling – two maidens of left arm blistering pace that left Merrion reeling. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 74.

Chasing a modest target, Pado and Damian set the tone with fluent 20s, punishing anything loose, earning both the Player of the Match awards from the opposing captains. Brian kept the scoreboard ticking with a classy 19, and the winning runs came with eight overs still in the bank.

A big thanks to John and Gourang for providing the all-important post-match pizzas, and to Merrion for a competitive and good-spirited contest.

However the night was tinged with sadness, as Merrion’s Joe McCarthy had tragically lost his brother Will on the eve of the match.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

We’ll meet again in a few weeks on Merrion’s famous Ballsbridge ground – the perfect stage to continue this freshly rekindled rivalry.
