Devastated in Druids Glen
Firstly, as always, we would like to thank Greystones for hosting the game on a stunning Friday evening in Druids Glen. The first time the Walnuts have played down there. Fabulous setting and a great game of cricket. The format was a slightly different 22 overs an inning - and 12 men a side.
Walnuts batted first and got of to a flyer with Brian and Liam opening (the former hitting his first 20 of the season and the latter unlucky to not get the milestone). Further fabulous batting from Josh (hitting a six of his last ball to get to his second 25 of the season), Martin to get his 2021 Walnuts season of to a flyer (22), Philip (12), and John Chambers for his debut 12 not out ran out the clock with Eddie (5) giving a score of 144 and Greystones a target of 145. We thought at half time, as the moon came out, we were in good shape.
Alas it wasn't to be as one of our major strengths this year, our fielding, let us down. There were a few mistakes on the field, balls going past, throwing invisible balls, and general misfields unfortunately. It should be noted that there were some outstanding performances as well (as the figures above can attest to) - Joshua's 3 runs of 3 overs for 2 wickets the highlight - but also the 2 great catches (esp the saffers diving catch to take into his body of the bowling of Frank - great field settings by the bowler and captain. The other wicket was taken by Liam (with a catch by Frank). Walnuts lost on the last ball of a frantic game, by 1 run, in somewhat controversial circumstances.
It should also be noted that the principle and generosity of a wide range of talent of Taverner cricket is always our basis in taking the field.
The awards went to (from the Walnuts captain, Brian) Josh got the nod for the away side (for an outstanding performance) , and Colin Reade of Greystones for bringing them across the line, and from the Greystones captain Damian got the MOM award for sportsmanship.
Roll on next Friday where the Walnuts will face North Kildare at home.
