We welcomed Arthur's Knights for our 2024 home opener in what proved to be both a poignant and entertaining encounter.

On a balmy sunny evening in Dublin 6W, before the start of play both teams gathered under the Walnut tree to honor the memories of two esteemed members. In a solemn moment of silence, we remembered our dear Walnut friend Cyril Crone, who passed away in March, and Knights' stalwart, and former President, Alex Wadkins, who left us just last month. Their mirth, humor, and grace were fondly recalled as we paid tribute to their legacies.    RIP chaps.

Sincere thanks to Philip and Eddie for their diligent pitch curation. In the first match of the season nearly 200 runs were scored on the famous track - with plenty of 20s. There was regular encouragement for the bowlers (as opposed to matting tracks) which kept all parties engaged and invested throughout the game.  Well done lads.

Walnut captain Garret won the toss and opted to bat with Liam and Colin putting on a sizeable opening stand as Liam brought up his 25 with a maximum near the famous tree itself.   After a mid innings collapse Peadar and Garret brought the Walnuts up to a competitive total of 96 - with the captain striking a 20.

For the Knights, wickets were shared between Tim, Ronan, and captain Frank. The latter achieved a double-wicket maiden and impressive bowling figures of 2-3.

In response, the Knights got off to a solid start, courtesy of Gavan and Ronan's well built opening partnership. However, their chase took a dramatic turn when Eoin was run out attempting a quick single.   This sudden setback galvanised the Walnuts. Excellent bowling—led by President Andrew (who claimed 2 wickets), Philip, Damian (with 1 wicket), Gerry, and Eddie—put a check on the Knights' run chase. Meanwhile, newcomer Jack dazzled in the outfield and delivered two high-quality overs of medium-fast bowling, but Des and Niaz ensured that the Knights' scoreboard continued to tick over as the St. Columbas men closed in on their target.
In a tense final over the Knights needed 7 runs to win but captain Garret produced the perfect 6 balls as the Walnuts won by 6 runs and regained the famous shield.

Afterwards, both teams retired to Terenure Rugby Club, where they enjoyed sublime catering provided by Philip (well Karen!!)

Congratulations to Men of the Match Cyril Molloy, Garret and Des - In his debut bowling performance Cyril produced an accurate and accomplished spell of bowling. Nice one Cyril!

During the speeches, Knights' captain Frank fondly recalled memories of Cyril Crone and Alex Wadkins. Both Cyril and Alex would have undoubtedly relished the evening.

As the sun set in Terenure, both teams enjoyed many an ale and each others good company—marking the first of many summer evenings to come.

Walnuts Win under the Tree.
