The Walnuts faced formidable opponents when Civil Service visited Terenure on Friday 5th July. With most of the visitors having league cricket experience, the challenge was immense.

Despite a 27-run defeat, the Walnuts can hold their heads high. Every player gave their all, and the team remained fully focused on the task at hand throughout the game. The Walnuts’ performance was exemplified by Cyril and Alex's tail-end stroke play, which sent the ball soaring into the outfield. Alex's first-ever boundary became a moment of pride for the team, characterising their wholehearted effort.

Credit is also owed to Andrew, who skilfully guided the tail through a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful run chase as once again Taverner cricket emerged victorious on the night.

Civil Service batted first and racked up 127 but the Walnut bowlers and fielders gave their all. Adam, Gourang, Jan, and Phillip posed a constant threat with the ball, and Jack's sensational running catch off stand in captain Colin's bowling might just be the catch of the season.

In reply, the Walnuts managed 100 runs, with Peadar and Gerry scoring prolific 20s. However, it was the collective effort of the boys with bat, ball, and in the field that stood out.

Special mention goes to Phillip for his immaculate pitch preparation, and Liam and Sean for the post-match food. Man of the match awards were well-deserved by Peadar and Gerry for the Walnuts, while Tony Connell received the honours for Civil Service. Tony's sportsmanship, stepping in after the original opponents withdrew, earned him the respect of both teams.

Tony also kindly offered to score for both teams, which was greatly appreciated by the Walnuts. A true gentleman who thoroughly deserved the bottle of red. Without a scorer, we don't have a match.

As the night wore on, both teams gathered in the bar until the late hours and talk turned to a rematch in the Phoenix Park next summer. 2025 plans are already taking shape!
