Walnuts End Home Season on a High

Walnut Taverners v Kerry Packers

For our final home fixture of the season, the Walnut Taverners welcomed the Kerry Packers, who made the long trek north from the Kingdom for a Friday afternoon encounter. A big thanks to Paul Swain and Kerry for making the journey, and to Philip for once again producing an immaculate track – the maestro of the Terenure College cricket square - never failing to deliver a pitch worthy of each and every occasion.

Batting first, our southern visitors found conditions testing. Wickets fell steadily as Sean, Mark, Philip, Liam and Gerry all chipped in with a wicket each. Man of the match Mark also took two sharp catches at fine leg aiding the Walnuts' cause.

Kerry battled hard but were eventually dismissed for 52 - helped by Kerry opening batsman and Packers POTM Tommy who swung with gusto outside off stump and powered to 17, including two towering 6s over deep midwicket.

In reply, the Walnuts set about the chase with composure. Damian (21), Philip (14) and Mark (12) ensured there were no alarms, guiding us to the target with 11 overs to spare.

Post-match, the Two Sisters proved the perfect setting to round off the evening. Thanks to Gerry for organising generous platters of hot food in the lively beer garden, where conversation quickly turned to the prospect of a return trip to Kerry next season.

And so another home cricket summer draws to a close at Terenure College. From sun-soaked afternoons to the odd rain delay, the Walnuts have enjoyed another season full of good cricket, great company and plenty of laughs. Roll on 2026.
