Walnuts well beaten in Malahide
Malahide Taverners @ Maladide May 20th 2022
Firstly we would like to thank Malahide Taverners for hosting the game on a blustery Friday evening in the glorious surroundings of Malahide Castle and Park.
Malahide are a seasoned, canny group of cricketers and proved to be formidable opposition - the home side ultimately running out comfortable victors, winning by 8 wickets.
The Walnuts batted first and lost early wickets. Peader fell second ball, troubled with a blow to the thumb off the previous, opening delivery and the tone was set.
Josh came to the crease and hit a swashbuckling 21 while Colin hit a circumspect 14, before being run out at the non-strikers end - the bowler deflecting the ball onto the stumps. Philip hit a resilient 12 but the overall score of 68 was always going to be a challenge to defend.
The Walnuts bowled and fielded manfully, but Malahide persistently chipped away at the total. Man of the match Garret contributed with an impressive debut over, troubling the batters on a number of occasions with precise line and length. Andrew, at fine leg, fielded with agility and determination while special mention to sub-fielder Eric (from Malahide) whose fielding electrified the deep point boundary. All Walnut players fielded to a very high standard exemplified by Cyril providing a sprightly stop at silly mid off.
As the sun set, both teams retired to the Malahide Pavilion for traditional beer and sandwiches in the famous home team pavilion, before setting off on their separate ways.
Malahide were generous, gracious hosts and we look forward to our next encounter where the Walnuts will be looking to reverse the result.
