Idle CC @ Terenure College July 24th 2022

In the summer of 2008 the Walnut Taverners toured the idyllic setting of Idle CC in the blissful hills of the Lombardy countryside. The wine flowed throughout a seminal day in the Terenure club's history and a promise was made to extend a warm Irish welcome to Idle CC.

So eventually, after a one year Covid delay, our esteemed Italian guests arrived in Dublin 6W.

The stars of the day were Karen and Emer, who with the help of many other Walnut members, provided some wonderful refreshments ranging from Pimms, beer, wine, sandwiches and fruit cake. We were thoroughly spoilt. Phillip's pitch was at its supreme best and Phillip is to be also commended for his leadership and organisation before and indeed throughout the day itself. Also thanks to Robert from Idle for supplying an exquisite montalcino which transcended all wines the writer has ever previously tasted.

On the field, the Walnuts bowled and fielded with aplomb. Damian inspired the Walnuts with sensational figures of 3-16, Andrew caused problems galore while Adam's pace had Idle constantly on the back foot.

However Idle themselves proved to be a class apart in the field. A combination of accurate medium pace and wily spin caused the Walnuts all kinds of trouble and despite some impressive hitting from Brian, Gerry and man of the match Damian, we were bowled all out for 75.

Afterwards both teams enjoyed a glorious, and much needed, chicken curry in the rugby club. The speeches were resplendent in good spirit and good humour and a further promise was made:- The Walnuts planning a visit to Italy and glorious Idle in the very near future.
