Sun Breaks Through—but Dalkey Break Through the Walnuts
Match Report: Walnuts vs Dalkey Archives
Dublin has seen 47mm of rain since June 1st—and it felt like 46mm of that fell the day before our match against the Dalkey Archives.
Huge credit goes to Philip for preparing the pitch under such testing conditions. Thankfully, the sun made a welcome return just in time for the match against our south Dublin neighbours.
Batting first, the Walnuts found scoring tough as a combination of disciplined, accurate bowling and a low, damp pitch restricted us to just 62 runs. Gerry (18) and Andrew (10) were the only batters to reach double figures.
Conditions improved noticeably as the afternoon wore on, with the pitch drying out and becoming flatter—much to Dalkey’s benefit. Despite wicket taking spells from Jan, Liam, Andrew, and Alex, the Archives reached the target with five overs to spare. Cyril took a sharp catch in the field, and there were flashes of tight bowling throughout, but some powerful lower middle-order hitting from Dalkey sealed the result.
Post-match, both teams enjoyed the warm hospitality of Philip and Sean. Man of the Match honours went to Mark and Jan.
While the result didn’t go our way, it was a joy to get a game in after such a wet spell—and we’re already looking forward to the return fixture in Shanganagh Park next month.
