Walnuts Win under the Tree.
In an exhilarating second meeting between the Walnut Taverners and Terenure RFC, the rugby team emerged as victors in a closely contested match. Despite the early start on a Saturday morning, Terenure's opening batsmen, Aaron and Calum, displayed exceptional technical prowess, setting the AIL Champions off to a blazing start.
The Walnut Taverners' fielders, led by Gerry, showcased their skills with MOTM Gerry taking three remarkable catches in the deep. Meanwhile, Phillip, Eddie, Jan, and Gerry himself bowled with dedicated precision, applying constant pressure on their illustrious opponents and restricting them to a modest total of 105 runs.
In response, the Walnut Taverners' opening pair, Liam and Damian, provided a solid foundation, with Liam contributing an elegant 20 runs. However, Terenure's impressive bowling attack and athletic fielding dismantled the Walnut Taverners' middle order.
Despite a valiant late surge from Andrew, the budgies managed to secure victory by a mere 5 runs.
Following the match, the post-match ceremony took place beneath the iconic Walnut tree, where Moggy proudly held the George Cree plate aloft. This new addition to the trophy cabinet joined the 2023 AIL Div1A trophy, the Bateman Cup, and the Leinster League Cup.
Undoubtedly, the plate will be pride of place in the trophy cabinet.
