Courage, Catches and Carnage: Gravediggers Triumph by 15 Runs
We welcomed our great pals the Gravediggers to Terenure College for an entertaining and eventful match up under cloudy July skies.
Fielding first, the Walnuts struck early as Colin claimed a wicket with a sharp delivery, brilliantly caught by Garret at deep square leg. Unfortunately, the moment came at a cost —Garret suffered a broken finger in the process and shortly thereafter had to leave for St Vincent's Hospital. After a late-night stint in A&E and finally getting out at 2am, we’re sending our skipper our best—and hoping he's back bossing the field soon.
Colin picked up a second wicket in his next over, with Damian, Andrew, and Eddie also getting among the wickets as the Gravediggers posted a total of 123. There was some tight bowling throughout, supported by sharp fielding. John impressed as stand-in wicketkeeper, while Brian was also a steady presence behind the stumps. Colin capped off the innings with a fine catch in the outfield, snatching a high, booming drive that seemed destined for the boundary.
Chasing 124, the Walnuts kept the scoreboard ticking over with Andrew (10) and Damian (12) making steady contributions. John (19) and Sean (18) posted their highest scores of the season, giving the innings some momentum. Liam lit up the tail with a taverner's maximum of 25, but despite the lower order resistance, the Walnuts ultimately came up 15 runs short.
Post-match, both teams shared well-earned pints and pizza (thanks to Damian and Colin), though the night ended on a sombre note as Brendan of the Gravediggers also required hospital attention after taking a blow to the head while fielding at midwicket. Thankfully Brendan was discharged from the Mater some 19 hours later.
Colin and John shared Man of the Match honours after a great evening of cricket, camaraderie, and carnage. See you in 2026 Gravediggers —hopefully with fewer injuries although we might put St John's Ambulance on standby.
