After the frustration of a washed-out season opener against Leinster, the Walnut Taverners regrouped under sunnier skies at the historic Phoenix Park to face Phoenix Cricket Club.
With a clear blue sky overhead and temperatures soaring, the Walnuts won the toss and chose to bat. The Phoenix bowlers, however, found their rhythm early, putting the Walnuts under pressure with tight, disciplined bowling that led to a flurry of early wickets.
A spirited counterattack was led by Gerry, who struck a blistering 20 runs, supported by solid contributions from Andrew, John, Adam, and Eddie. Despite their efforts, the Taverners posted a total of 93 - likely a touch below par given the conditions.
During the interval, both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of Kevin Fahy, a much-loved member of Phoenix CC who sadly passed away at the end of last season. It was a fitting tribute to a valued figure in the local Phoenix Park cricketing community (and beyond).
In response, Phoenix batted with composure and steadily built momentum. Despite some sharp spells from Eddie, Gerry, and Adam, who all bowled with skill and heart, the home side chased down the target without loss and with four overs to spare.
The match ended in true cricketing spirit, with both teams sharing a few well-earned pints in the Phoenix club bar. Man of the Match honours were shared by Adam and Gerry for their all-round efforts.
Many thanks to Phoenix CC for their generous hospitality and post-match fare. We look forward to renewing the rivalry and friendship next summer.
