Cyril Crone RIP. -2024

Cyril Crone……Happy Days.

Just those four words. Self explanatory. Etched forever in our memories.

A pocket dynamo of fun and laughter. A Big man in a small frame.

Full of mischief, devilment and camaraderie.

An absolute Terenure man through and through Purple White and Black ran through his veins along with the odd pint of Guinness..

From his family butchers shop in Terenure Village he learned his trade and communication skills. He was a consummate conversationalist. He was always at home in the middle of any group holding court and telling yarns be it down in the Clubhouse in Lakelands on a Sunday afternoon with his close mates John, Joe and Niall and a wider audience of regulars or on a cricket tour to St. Tropez, Berlin or Milan where he was always feted by our hosts who simply fell in love with his infectious personality.

His love of Rugby and Terenure RFC is reknown. He supported the Club all his life and was passionate about the history and future of Rugby in Lakelands.

His transition to Taverner cricket came about when fellow past pupils Paul Ryan and Bosco Morrissey and others started the Terenure College Taverners in 1980. Cyril became an enthusiastic member. His unorthodox bowling action and W.G.Grace style of batting made him an instant favourite for both home and opposition teams alike. When the College Taverners evolved into The Walnuts he embraced the new found drive and was to the fore in making every Tour a successful memory. From Croatia to Sweden. France and Italy and so many other destinations he was the Tour Jester keeping us in fits of laughter and winning over the opposition if not on the pitch certainly off it…

That said he managed some individual feats of brilliance catching a screamer at silly mid on in Kolswa Sweden in the Midnight Cup and hitting a Four on the last ball against St.Tropez CC in the Polo grounds. The memory of him being carried off the pitch shoulder high by the opposition in Potsdam Germany will stay with me forever.

Our deepest sympathy to Wendy and Graham on such a great loss for them and their families. Cyril was a great family man and loved his family dearly and it was so evident they loved him back in equal amount. Cyril has gone to join his beloved Mary who passed away 2 years ago.

We will miss him so much in The Walnuts. He is irreplaceable. A one off.

Forever Terenure RFC. Forever a Walnut.

It all depends on you men

Show that you are True men

Play the game and Fight for fame

That’s what I expect from Terenure men.

Cyril Crone….Happy Days.

May you rest in peace my friend.

Paul MacKay

RIP.  Terenure Walnuts Founding member

Another stalwart of Taverners in Terenure College leaves the field of play.
Paul MacKay a founding member of the Terenure College Taverners back in 1980 and forerunner of The Walnuts passed away on June 11th 2024 and we send our heartfelt sympathy to his children Ronan, Elva and Gavan and to his extended family.
Paul was predeceased by his beloved wife Lila and son Neil.
Paul was instrumental back in the 1990's in securing our first and only cricket mat. He was personally involved in solely financing the project and we happily played on it until it was vandalised many years later.
Paul was a sociable and generous man and gave of his time and energy  without thought. Forward looking and active he was alway keen to engage in progress.
Such a likeable guy and gentleman.
Paul. You will be missed.

Poem by Pat's Sister Mary

Phil,Cyril,Terry,Frank and Muller,Michael,Simon,Joe and others.
The Dropping Well with Doc Pat for a pint. They'd chat about sport and just hang out.
There was Rugby,Cricket, trips away.
St. Mary's. The Walnuts, depending which day.
With Fixtures and Leagues t'was a lot to do.
With Doc Pat on board the comradeship grew.
You have passed on now,'tis no longer the same,
But I know you are watching never missing a game.
You are missed so much for your kindness and fun.
Up there with your Parents, your new journeys begun.
So here's to my dearest kid brother Pat
Raise a glass to his honour and never forget
This wonderful man who enjoyed the craic
I love you to the moon and back.

Penned by Big Sis Mary.

Our Wonderful Friend and fellow Walnut Georgie Cree passed away this morning. An inspiration to everyone on how to grow old. NEVER!!! Georgie played into his eighties and was one of the bravest players you could meet. He has gone to join his beloved Monica. Rest in Peace Mate, and keep turning left.

Bosco Morrissey
RIP.  Terenure Walnuts Founding member.  1946-2024

It is with Deep Regret that we hear of the passing of Bosco Morrissey.
One of the Founders of the Terenure College Taverners back in the summer of 1980 it was the basis on which The Walnut Taverners was formed from a background of Terenure College Past Pupils.
Bosco had a larger than life personality. He excelled in both Rugby and Cricket and everyone knew of Bosco in those circles. After many years as a player with Terenure College RFC he became President in 1999-2000 and was a very loyal member.
He was a main motivator in the early years of the Taverners and a very useful Batsman. Extremely hard to get out.  He kept the scorebook and was our very first Groundsman. Indeed he passed on his groundskeeping knowledge to those that followed him. When he finally hung up his pads he was always about the club on friday nights enquiring how The Taverners were faring in the season and how the wicket was behaving and still taking an interest in all things Cricket. He will be sadly missed but NEVER forgotten by all connected with Cricket and Rugby in Terenure. Our sincere condolences to The Morrissey family at this sad time and to Bosco's brother Thomas and nephew Martin who are present day Walnut Taverners.
May he Rest in Peace.

Ronan played with the Taverners throughout the 90's.
He was an accomplished sportsman having played rugby for Terenure Coll RFC and also tennis in Templeogue Tennis club, and cricket was just another game he played
