Kerry Packers @ Terenure College June 24th 2022
The evening started with threatening clouds and spits of rain but ended in glorious sunshine as the matchup between the Walnut Taverners and Kerry Packers ended in an exhilarating tie.
Firstly, we would like to thank the Kerry Packers for making the lengthy trip from the Kingdom. For a team who've only played a handful of matches together, their performance was commendable as both teams befitted the occasion by playing the contest in a wonderful spirit.
Batting first on Phillip's pristine track, the Walnuts totalled 123 with significant contributions from Brian, Josh and Gerry. Batting with pinache the Walnut middle order formed the bedrock of the innings.
The Kerry Packers' bowling was spearheaded by Tommy and Richie, both bowling at pace and deservedly taking a wicket apiece.
Chasing an above par score, the Kerry Packers consistently maintained the run rate of 6 runs per over. Jonathan batted with a free flowing technique while guest player Peader bludgeoned runs all over the college ground. Richie of the Packers stroked an assured 20 not out while Frank, Josh and Sean checked the Packers' progress with a wicket each.
And so needing 5 runs to win off the final over, the Walnuts turned to Ian Fitz. With nerves of steel, Fitzy bowled an accomplished final spell conceding just 4 runs as the match ended in a fitting tie.
Post match celebrations were had in the rugby club with man of the match awards going to Tommy and Fitzy.
Thanks again to Paul Swaine and the Kerry Packers for making the trip to Dublin and we agreed to arrange a return trip to Listowel next summer.
Kerry - watch out.
The Walnut Taverners are coming.
