Walnuts Win under the Tree.

Evening Herald @ Terenure College , June 21st 2024

On a rain-soaked evening in Terenure, the Walnuts struggled to match powerful Evening Herald batting and succumbed to a 66-run defeat.

Stand-in captain Colin lost the toss, and the Herald made quick work of the Walnuts' bowling, posting a sizable total of 142. The wet outfield made the ball difficult to grip, and the Herald dispatched a number of full tosses to the boundary.

The standout bowler was the brilliant Tom, who at one stage was on the cusp of a Taverners hat trick in the final over. Jack also bowled with gusto, picking up an early wicket and bowling with pace while debutant Goran shone with ball in hand picking up a debut wicket during an accomplished spell.

In reply, the Walnuts struggled on the rain-soaked pitch. The Walnuts grappled with timing as the bounce got slower and lower, while facing precise bowling from the Herald.

However, Peadar and Gerry stood firm, each scored hit stylish 20s, but in the end the Walnuts could only muster 76 runs.

After the match, both teams retired to the clubhouse. There, Sean fondly reminisced about the recently departed Paul McKay, a founding Walnut member. The year 2024 will undoubtedly be remembered with poignancy and sadness, considering the number of Walnut and Taverner cricketers in general who have passed away.

Tom deservedly won man of the match following his bowling exploits (not to mention a 9 not out). Special thanks also go to Andrew and Damian for the sandwiches and sausage rolls.

Though it was a heavy defeat on the pitch, it did not stop us Walnuts from drowning our collective sorrows until just past closing time! Defeat on the field was followed by victory in the bar! On we go…
