Gravediggers @ Terenure College August 26th 2022

Twenty years ago the Gravediggers Pub in Glasnevin formed a cricket club and ever since have been a mainstay in the Walnut Taverners' fixture list.

And so we welcomed our convivial visitors to the college where we played a most enjoyable, good spirited encounter with the Walnuts winning for the first time in eight games.

Batting first, and with Dublin GAA legend John O'Leary in their ranks, the Gravediggers got off to a flying start and reached a formidable 75 off 8 overs. This was despite excellent bowling from Josh who finished with 13 for 1 wicket. The Gravediggers' opening better Phil Hall played one of the best innings all summer hitting a rapid 24 off just 9 balls.

But the effervescent Sean McGinn put in a MOTM performance and claimed three scalps with the remarkable figures of 2 runs for 3 wickets as the Gravediggers posted  a score of 105 with  Andrew and Mark claiming a wicket apiece.  Meanwhile in the field,  Eddie claimed one of the catches of the season out in the deep.

Chasing what was still a good score the Walnuts looked assured and composed at the crease. Brian and Liam hit 20s while Peadar and Josh made 16 each with both striking sublime 6s (Peadar's mighty blow ended up in the tennis courts).

Garret chipped in with 14 while Colin and Sean saw the Walnuts over the line with Sean majestically stroking the winning 4.

Afterwards both teams enjoyed a great night in the rugby club with cricket and sportsmanship the winner as always.

We look forward to our matchup next year and hopefully we'll even get to play each other twice, home and away.
