Gravediggers @ Terenure College , June 26th 2026
Just as Ireland were completing a famous maiden victory over the world T20 champions India, the Walnuts welcomed our northside friends, the Gravediggers, to Terenure.
With temperatures reaching 26°C — surely a record for a cricket match in D6W — captain Gerry won the toss and led the team into the field. Facing a powerful Gravediggers batting line-up, the Walnuts worked hard throughout the innings as the visitors amassed a challenging 139 runs.
Josh was the standout performer with the ball, producing a superb spell that yielded two wickets, as well as a run-out effected by Gerry's sharp work behind the stumps.
Jan made life difficult for the Gravediggers' opening batsmen with an excellent spell with the new ball, while Liam, Brian and Colin maintained the pressure by bowling with impressive accuracy and discipline.
In reply, the Walnuts made a spirited start. Mike struck a quickfire 20, while Gerry entertained with a rapid 21 that included three towering sixes. Despite the best efforts of the middle order, the target ultimately proved beyond reach and the Walnuts closed on 99.
After the match, as the temperature "plummeted" into the high teens, players from both sides enjoyed beers and pizza under the tree while already looking forward to the return fixture in four weeks' time.
Congratulations to Players of the Match, Gerry and Josh, and a huge thank you to Brian and Liam for providing the post-match pizza. Special thanks also to Brian for preparing another superb track on which to play.
