MATCH REPORT: CIVIL SERVICE VS. WALNUT TAVERNERS

Date: Friday 15th May 2026

Venue: Phoenix Park

On a sunny Friday evening in Phoenix Park, the Walnut Taverners faced a formidable and highly sporting Civil Service side. Batting first, the Walnuts posted a modest 105. Tight bowling kept the pressure on, and some kamikaze running didn't help—though, in fairness, the batters were understandably petrified by the roaring elephants next door! Despite the panic, Gourang and Liam stood tall as joint 'TopNuts', both scoring crucial 20s.

Defending the total, the Walnuts put in a brilliant shift in the field. Garret, Jan, and Mike bowled excellently, delivering a clinic in control, while Adam and Graham were outstanding in the backfield. While having to cope with guest captain Gerry constantly tinkering the field positions, Cyril, Sean, Paddy, and Fuzzy provided some seriously tidy fielding, using whatever body part they chose to stop the ball. Meanwhile, Ger bowled the first two overs of his career and looked like a seasoned Taverner rather than a newbie.

The undisputed star of the night was Santos, who earned his Man of the Match award with a sensational all-round performance, hitting his 20, snaring 2 wickets, and even briefly joining the Walnuts on the boundary to help with the fielding.

Civil Service chased down the target with class. Their new captain, Matthew, managed his lineup perfectly and keeping the game highly sporting. While Civils definitely had an extra few runs in them if needed, they played in the true spirit of the game, taking only what was required to secure the win. It was a fantastic game against a top side and a brilliant bunch of guys!

The post-match sprint to the bar proved that no animal in that zoo would get in for pizza faster than a bounding Walnut—particularly when accompanied by well-deserved pints!
