Walnuts Fall Short in Season Finale
In our last match of the 2025 season, the Walnuts made the short trip across town to leafy Ballsbridge and the picturesque surrounds of Merrion CC.
Batting first, Merrion set about their work briskly. All of their top six contributed 20s in a display of relentless consistency, building an imposing total of 172 despite a lengthy interruption for rain. The undoubted highlight in the field came when Gourang pulled off a sensational diving catch in the deep to give Alex a deserved wicket.
In reply, the Walnuts showed both grit and flair. Gourang (21) and Gerry (25) produced elegant knocks of high quality batting, while Damian (14) and Brian (17) added valuable lower-order resistance. Cyril struck a career-best 6 and Sean landed some meaty blows late on, but despite our determination, the chase ended just short against a strong Merrion attack.
Men of the Match were fittingly shared between Gourang, for his all-round brilliance, and Brian, for his fighting innings and glove work.
Post-match, we enjoyed Merrion’s trademark hospitality under the shadow of their famous pavilion – a fine way to close out the day and domestic season.
And so, the curtain comes down on another Walnut summer. Every player contributed to what was a memorable campaign, with special thanks due to Philip and Damian for their tireless efforts off the field, and to captain Garret and vice-captain Gerry for leading us with good humour and steady hands week after week.
Our 2025 chapter ends here – but our sights are already turning towards the next adventure: Toulouse awaits.
