On a cold, blustery evening in D6W, Terenure played host to Arthur’s Knights for a highly anticipated clash.
Batting first, the Walnuts put on a solid, disciplined performance. Openers Garret and Liam set a fantastic platform, while Gerry and Tom provided the fireworks in the middle order. Gerry, in particular, played a spectacular innings; after scoring just 1 run from his first 6 deliveries, he unleashed a stunning exhibition of power-hitting, blitzing two sixes and two fours in quick succession.
The Knights’ bowling attack fought back valiantly. Colin, Des, and Tim all impressed, with Tim leading the charge by claiming two wickets and taking two sharp catches. Though the Knights bowled with great intent—and unluckily managed to claim a few 'first-ball wickets' that ultimately didn't swing the result—the Walnuts posted a formidable total. In reply, the Knights found runs incredibly hard to come by. A disciplined and clinical bowling display from Eddie, Liam, Alex, and Mark strangled the run chase, ultimately bowling the Walnuts to a well-earned victory.
A huge debt of gratitude goes to Garret and Philip for their incredible pitch preparation. Following a May heatwave and torrential rain in the first week of June, the duo somehow produced a surface that yielded nearly 200 runs—an even more heroic feat considering Philip was nursing a debilitating shoulder injury.
The post-match accolades were shared across both teams with both captains, Garret and Frank, along with Mark, picking up bottles of wine.
As the heavens opened, both teams retreated to the welcoming confines of The Two Sisters pub. It proved to be the perfect setting for a fantastic evening of post-match analysis, storytelling, and camaraderie, with celebrations stretching late into the night (or 12:30am for some of us!).
The Walnuts look forward to the rematch at St. Columba’s this August!
