UMPIRE COURSE 2011

Once again Alan Tuffrey is hosting The Leinster Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association   ECB ACO level 1 course . The venue is to be decided but most likely to be in Malahide C.C.  It is a very informative and excellent course and anyone interested should contact Alan Tuffrey. I believe the course starts in January 2011.
See their link on our Players / Members page.

30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WALNUT TAVERNERS 1980 - 2010

This season of 2010 will mark our 30th year as a taverner side. It was in the Summer of 1980 that a small group of Past Pupils decided to form a fledgling Taverner Team and play against some local sides. Some of those founding members are thankfully still with us today and we also play against some of those same teams that were on our very first fixture list way back in 1980. ( See Club History Page )

 AGM / 2009

Our AGM was held in the Castle Inn on the 22/10.09
A total of 14 members attended.
Philip Whelan was elected as President for the 2010 season and Graham Whelan was elected as Captain.
Rob Byrne, David Mowlds and Paul Ryan were re-elected in their positions of Hon. Sec. Treasurer and Fixtures Sec.
Philip Whelan and Sean McGinn will continue to be the Keepers of The Crease.

As the 2010 season promises to be a hectic year on and off the crease we have decided to start Nets a little earlier in January / February 2010.
We will be upgrading our Kit and Bats / Gloves / Pads etc will all be purchased.

Tom and Eddie have kindly offered to give some help to  Fr. Eoin with the logistics of running the school teams for next year and we will have 2 or 3 extra teams added to our own fixture list for 2010.

AGM 2010

Our AGM was held in Lakelands on Friday March 4th 2011. A little later than usual due to various setbacks.
Georgie Cree was elected President. Eddie Doyle our new Captain and Sean McGinn stepped into the role of Treasurer when David Mowlds decided to call it a day after so many years keeping us all on the straight and narrow and more importantly IN THE BLACK! David's fiscal policies and deep pockets have kept our balance sheets in a healthy state down the years. Thank you Mowldsy. Rob Byrne remains as Hon Sec and Al and Paul Ryan continue the fraught job of Match Sec. Our membership numbers have increased along with our fixtures list for this season. We have a short away tour to Nottingham and we have our good friends from Guttsta CC Sweden coming over to visit us in July. A new constitution is been drafted and this should be in place in time before our first ball is batted.
Another Very busy year ahead for us and hopefully one that will be filled with as much laughter and fun that 2010 brought.

Annual Dinner / Awards Night 2009

A great turnout and a wonderful night. All credit must go to the Dinner committee of Tom, Sean,Rob and Dave with the help of Paul Ryan.
Awards to Fitzer, Coxy, Peadar and Al. Well done and all well deserved. A Fun and Enjoyable evening/night/early morning! had by ALL.
2009 was a good year under the stewartship of Blisters and Coxy and lets hope that 2010 will be as enjoyable. It certainly will be eventful by all accounts. More Matches. An away Tour to Sweden and the 150th Garden Party Vintage Cricket match. It will be a full Year Ahead!!

Dinner / Awards Night 2010

Another great evening at The Grange Golf Club.  This year we combined The Golf day and The Annual Dinner on the same date.
2010 has been a very busy and exciting year for The Walnuts. We won 3 pieces of silverware from 4 competitions. We staged the wonderful Vintage cricket match and we competed in the terrific Midnight Cup Tournament over in Sweden.
Coxsy was Batsman of the year and Grahamo received The Bowler of the year. Liam O'Neill deservedly won Taverner of the year.
Captain Graham relived some of the "special" little moments that occurred  on the field of play  during the seaon and made presentations to those involved. The McGinners awards were as ever the comic moment of the evening. This year we initiated the "Mowldsy Health and Safety Award"  MHASA . This will be given to a person/persons who participates in an act liable to cause distress and pain to themselves / laughter to others.
Well done to all involved on the night. Our little band of Walnuts is growing. This year we had 35 players taking part in our matches throughout the seaon. We played 17 matches in total. 15 and 2 away in Sweden. Thanks goes to Fr. Michael and Fr. Eoin, Shauna and Richard and his groundstaff for all their help and support through the year. To Terenure RFC for providing us with changing/showering facilities for the Apres Match and TO ALL OUR WALNUT MEMBERS WHO COMBINE TO MAKE US WHAT WE ARE.

TOUR TO SWEDEN FOR THE MIDNIGHT CUP TOURNAMENT JULY 2010

WELL. WHAT A GREAT TRIP.
15 HAPPY, EXHAUSTED WALNUTS ARRIVED BACK TO DUBLIN CLUTCHING SOME SILVERWARE.
UNFORTUNATELY NOT THE MIDNIGHT CUP BUT THE RUNNERS UP TROPHY AFTER PLAYING 2 VERY HARD TIGHT MATCHES.
OUR GROUP OF 16 CUT SHORT TO 15 AFTER A CRUEL PIECE OF MISFORTUNE TO OUR TRIP ORGANISER MOWLDSY ON THE EVE OF DEPARTURE MEANT HE COULD NOT TRAVEL WITH US TO EXPERIENCE THE WONDERFUL OCCASION AND  HOSPITALITY OF GUTTSTA CC.
WE ARRIVED IN STOCKHOLM ON THE THURSDAY AND QUICKLY SET ABOUT SEEING THE SIGHTS THAT EVENING. AFTER OUR VISIT TO THE ICEBAR, "MOST OF US" CALLED IT AN NIGHT AND RETURNED TO THE SHERATON HOTEL IN ANTICIPATION FOR OUR 2 HOUR COACH TRIP UP TO KOHLSWA AND OUR MATCH AGAINST THE MIGHTY WANDERERS OF LONDON WITH A START TIME OF 12. NOON THE NEXT DAY.
JOSEPH AND THE GUYS AT GUTTSTA HAD ARRANGED SOME LOCAL MEDIA RADIO AND SWEDISH TELEVISION STATION SVTV2 TO BE PRESENT TO RECORD A PIECE FOR THEIR SPORTS EDITIONS. (SEE BELOW FOR LINKS)
A WIN AGAINST THE MIGHTY WANDERERS WAS NOT TO BE THOUGH.
THIS TEAM HAD TRAVELLED TO SWEDEN BEFORE AND HAD WON THE MIDNIGHT CUP ON THEIR 2 PREVIOUS SOJURNS SO THEY WERE A STRONG FOCUSED SIDE AND ALTHOUGH WE PLAYED WITH GREAT HEART AND TACTICAL SKILL AND AT TIMES SEEMED TO BE VERY CLOSE IT WAS ONE MAN WHO MADE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINNING AND LOSING AND HE PUT UP A TERRIFIC KNOCK FOR THE WANDERERS.
UNDAUNTED AND WITH GREAT FIRED UP SPEECHES FROM OUR CAPTAIN GRAHAMO WHO SET AN ATTACKING FIELD AFTER WE HAD PUT UP 124 AGAINST GUTTSTA, WE CURTAILED THE SWEDISH SIDE TO 70 PLUS RUNS TO WIN THE MATCH.
UNBRIDLED JOY!!
GUTTSTA CC ARE A GREAT SIDE WITH SUPERB BOWLERS AND IT WAS NO SHOCK TO SEE THEM GIVING THE MIGHTY WANDERERS A VERY CLOSE MATCH ON THE FINAL DAY. THEY WERE REALLY UNFORTUNATE TO LOSE BY JUST 13 RUNS.
THE MIDNIGHT CUP IS A WONDERFUL COMPETITION  WITH TEAMS FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN A VERY FRIENDLY BUT COMPETITIVE FASHION. THE HOST SIDE WICKED CC GUTTSTA ARE A MARVELLOUS CLUB WITH DEDICATED MEMBERS AND A WONDERFUL GROUND KEPT IN TIP TOP CONDITION BY HASSE. THE HOSPITALITY FROM JOSEPH AND NAVEEN AND STEFAN AND ALL THE GUYS FROM GUTTSTA WAS VERY WELCOMING AND OUR STAY AT THE KOHLSWA HERRGARD HOTEL FOR THAT WEEKEND WAS A DELIGHT. THANK YOU SUSAN.
WE RETURNED TO STOCKHOLM AND THE SHERATON ON LATE SUNDAY EVENING.  SOME OF THE TROOPS IN A POOR STATE OF REPAIR. TREVOR (TOE BUSTED) GEORGE AND GRAHAM (MOSSIE BITES) AND OUR DIETERY NEEDS CHANGING FROM REINDEER AND OSTRICH TO MACDONALDS!
EVERYONE ENJOYED OUR FREE DAY IN STOCKHOLM ON THE TUESDAY BEFORE OUR COURT SESSION AND FINALLY OUR GALA DINNER AND AWARDS CEREMONY THAT EVENING IN THE HOTEL.
GREAT CREDIT GOES TO OUR CAPTAIN GRAHAM FOR MAKING GOOD TACTICAL ON FIELD DECISIONS AND MAKING SURE ALL 15 PLAYED AND PLAYED TO THEIR BEST. WITHOUT SINGLING ANYONE OUT IN PARTICULAR FOR EVERYONE PLAYED THEIR PART BUT THERE WAS SOME TERRIFIC BOWLING, SPECTACULAR CATCHING IN THE FIELD AND REAL DOGGED BATTING WHEN WE NEEDED TO DIG DEEP. SO WELL DONE TO ALL THE TEAM:
GRAHAM / ANDY / ARTHUR / GEORGE / CYRIL / TREVOR / ROLY / AL / DAVE / COLIN / SEAN / COXSY / FITZY / JOHN / PHILIP
OUR FLIGHT BACK HOME TO DUBLIN ON TUESDAY WAS AN UNREMARKABLE AFFAIR. NO BAGS LOST OR LEFT IN COPENHAGEN! (SEE CREE/WHELAN)
FOR MOST OF US THIS WAS OUR FIRST TASTE OF SWEDEN. I KNOW THAT MANY WOULD LIKE TO RETURN AND IF GUTTSTA CC WANTS US BACK IN FUTURE TOURNAMENTS I AM SURE  WE WILL BE BACK.

SKAL.

BURSARY FOR THE SCHOOLS CRICKET TEAMS

We have initiated a Special Annual Bursary to begin next season (April/May 2010) to coincide with the 150th Anniversary.

The Irish Cricket Team has  taken Cricket in Ireland to a new Level in the past few years and has given great prominence to the game throughout Ireland. We should endeavour to help The College in as many ways possible to help the great cricketing spirit that Fr. Grace RIP and now Fr. Eoin has generated in the school.

PRESIDENTS GOLF DAY

2009

A terrific day was had by one and all at The Grange. Some "Well Balanced" 3 balls arranged by Sean led to a very close finish. Al Ryan came away with 1st place just edging out Ian Cox in 2nd place with Paul Goddard coming in a close third. Great thanks also to Paul and Al Ryan for arranging the venue. We all decamped to The Castle Inn for a meal later that evening. This is our third Walnut Golf outing albeit on an irregular basis and the general concensus is that we should make it an annual event.

2010

Another great day and night at The Grange Golf Club. The weather although inclement at times did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 12 doughty golfers competing for the Presidents prize.
Mr. Ian Cox had a terrific round and topped the group to win the coveted prize.  M/s Jenny Coyle took the best guest award.
Thanks again go to Paul and Al Ryan in arranging the venue. The annual golf day is fast becoming a positive event in the Walnut calender.
